Dear School Board,

I have two kids in High School currently, and 1 soon to be 2 at Barranca.  My family would prefer a school calendar close to a traditional schedule, preferably Calendar A.

I have a few questions and concerns:

  1. Have you contacted the elementary school teachers or their union to see if they would be open to contract negotiation?
  2. Have you taken into consideration a combination of different options?  For example, adding 10 minutes to the end of the elementary school day, or getting rid of only 2 of the 4 half days?
  3. Are you taking into consideration the opinions of the high school teachers?  They somewhat recently pushed for finals to be before Christmas break because the students were having a hard time retaining information.  Are we able to keep finals before Christmas break?
  4. Are the High School teachers going to have to work extra during breaks, to help the students participate in extra-curricular activities?  From Music, to Sports, Speech and Debate, and even Robotics….  The High Schools around the state are not that likely to go to a balanced schedule.
  5. I would like my High Schooler to have a summer job.  Not all students are able to work during school because of a heavy school load.
  6. Would the neighborhood pools financially be able to function on the reduced hours they will have to have because of a lack of life guards?

Overall, I’m concerned that this decision is being rushed and that there is more research needed.  I think it is important to keep the high school on a traditional schedule.  I think changes to the elementary school schedule need to be explored further.  Please do not make a decision on the limited options put forward tonight, if you do need to because of the time crunch, please vote Calendar A.   I appreciate the time and effort that have been made.

Sincerely,

Jeanette Moss
