Hey everyone!

Here's a quick recap for today's Lance Community Sync:

Recording: https://youtu.be/254vXhUI5MA

Key Updates
  • Lance 3.0.0 SDK released: The release landed today after the community vote closed. A Lance 3.0.1 bug-fix release is likely soon to include fixes merged after the release candidate.
  • Lance is now a core DuckDB extension: The extension moved from the community page into DuckDB’s core extension set, improving discoverability and distribution. Docs and install commands will follow once DuckDB CI finalizes.
  • Lance 2.2 file format adoption: Discussion focused on how to make the Lance 2.2 file format the default while maintaining compatibility with older SDKs. Work will document SDK ↔ file format support and explore upgrade paths for existing indexes.
  • Distributed vector index proposal: A new design removes the single-node merge bottleneck by making shards directly searchable segments. Early benchmarks suggest up to a 20x speedup in the merge phase; a PR with benchmarks is expected shortly.
  • Other updates: A PR to speed up FTS index creation and reduce memory usage is under review, and a critical bug fix for the Lance-Trino extension has merged.
What to Watch For Next
  • Community vote to shorten the major release voting window from one week to three days.
  • Distributed vector index proposal and benchmarks to be shared on Discord for community feedback.
  • SDK ↔ file format compatibility table and potential mechanisms for upgrading existing indexes to newer file formats.

Our next community sync will be on Thursday, March 26 at 9am PT. See you then!

Thank you,
ChanChan Mao
