Hey everyone!

Here's a quick recap of last week's Lance Community Sync:

Key Updates
  • DuckDB integration upgrade: Lance DuckDB extension moved from community to core extension; users should migrate for full support.
  • PrestoDB connector merged: New community-driven Lance connector enables SQL access via PrestoDB; early-stage (POC), not yet production.
  • Lance 4.0.0 SDK release in progress: RC3 is out after FTS performance updates; community testing + voting requested before final release.
  • Index & performance improvements: New index metadata (e.g., index size visibility) and ongoing work on vector/FTS index details and segmentation for better scalability.
  • Design process changes under discussion: Likely hybrid approach—GitHub Discussions as source of truth + Google Docs for detailed design; cleanup of “ideas” vs proposals also being considered.
What to Watch For Next
  • Lance 4.0.0 SDK final release: Pending RC3 validation and community vote.
  • Ongoing design discussions:
    • Index segmentation vs partition namespace direction
    • Improvements to index metadata + distributed FTS design
  • Potential repo/process updates: Guidance on discussions vs issues, and GitHub workflow security improvements (CodeQL, linters).
Our next community sync will be on Thursday, April 9 at 9am PT. Feel free to add discussion topics to the meeting doc. See you then!

Thank you,
ChanChan Mao
