Boundary Study Info Session Recap and Next PTA Meeting on 6/24

Thanks to everyone that was able to attend Wednesday night’s Boundary Study Info meeting. Based on the discussion and feedback, the KP PTA will be holding a special PTA meeting on Tuesday, June 24th to formally review and vote on the following:
Proposed KP priorities that will be used to formulate a position to MCPS regarding the Boundary Study and have the KP PTA Board send on the behalf of KP
Formation of a KP Advocacy Committee that would support the KP WJ Cluster Reps and advocacy efforts.

WHEN IS THE MEETING?
The KP PTA meeting will be held virtually on TUESDAY, JUNE 24th FROM 6:30 - 7:00 PM. (Zoom link to follow in a separate email from KP PTAl)
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Any and all KP PTA members! While this meeting is specifically for the KP PTA, other community members who are not part of the PTA are welcomed and encouraged to advocate for KP and can use the same points shared in this communication.
WHAT IF I’M A KP PARENT BUT NOT A PTA MEMBER?
If you aren’t a member and want to join, please check out our PTA website to learn more and join! The website also has a link to add yourself to the KP PTA listserv (KPeaglenet).
WHAT SHOULD I DO BEFORE THE MEETING?
Read the proposed priorities, as well as for a description of the proposed Advocacy Committee. Per PTA bylaws, we will review and vote on both items during the June 24th meeting.

Proposal: KP Position Points
The points listed below represent our community’s priorities based on feedback received. As drafted, they are intentionally broad and do NOT advocate for any specific option currently presented. We will then formulate more detailed reasoning on each priority using the four factors listed in the MD Board of Education’s policy on Educational Facilities Planning. These four factors are: (1) demographic characteristics of student population/FARMS diversity, (2) geography, (3) stability of school assignments over time, and (4) facility utilization.
Proposed priorities for KP:
Keep the KP community together (all areas of our current school boundary) and do not split
Keep us articulating together to Walter Johnson High School
Advocate to remain in North Bethesda Middle School or stay silent on Middle School preference for now?
Grandfathering rising KP 7th graders (only comes into play if we decide to stay silent on Middle School because if we advocate to stay in both North Bethesda and Walter Johnson there is essentially no change or need to repeat the WJ Cluster’s advocacy point of grandfathering rising 7th graders)
Note: Outside of developing a KP Position, individuals and others in the community can also advocate on their own. To make the most effective argument, it is recommended to provide points based on MCPS Four Factors.
Proposal: KP Advocacy Committee
Proposal is to form a WJ Cluster committee focused on advocacy support. Near-term objectives and responsibilities of the committee members would include:
Represent different geographies of the KP community (Tuckerman, TOK, Parkwood/KECA)
Help continue to cascade and educate on status and outcomes of the boundary study
Support advocacy activities on behalf of the PTA, including: drafting writing letters/testimony, providing guidance/talking points to the community, attending and encouraging other parents to attend key meetings where we need to show-up in numbers, etc.
It is also worth noting that other schools have existing Advocacy committees so this request would bring us to parity with our peers and be established so that we can activate more quickly should future topics require action (e.g., operating budget, funding to complete high school auditorium construction)
Survey Feedback Suggested Guidance
Please take a few minutes to complete MCPS’s survey on the four initial options. It includes open-ended questions where you can share what you like or don’t like about each proposal. The survey is open until July 15th.
Remember, the initial options were drafted intentionally to maximize one of the four MCPS priorities, but these options are not final. Refined options will be shared in September, shaped by community feedback. If you already submitted feedback, you are allowed to submit more than once. .
Should you need or want guidance on how to provide feedback, see the attached document for thought-starters. Pick and choose what best represents your thoughts. You are also not obligated to use any of these statements if you do not wish to do so.

Propuesta: Puntos de Posición de KP
Los puntos que se detallan a continuación representan las prioridades de nuestra comunidad, según los comentarios recibidos. Tal como están redactados, son intencionalmente generales y no abogan por ninguna opción específica actualmente presentada. Posteriormente formularemos razonamientos más detallados para cada prioridad utilizando los cuatro factores establecidos en la política del Consejo de Educación de Maryland sobre Planificación de Instalaciones Educativas. Orientación sugerida para comentarios sobre la encuesta
Tómate unos minutos para completar la encuesta de MCPS sobre las cuatro opciones iniciales. Incluye preguntas abiertas donde puedes compartir lo que te gusta o no te gusta de cada propuesta. La encuesta estará disponible hasta el 15 de julio.
