Last week, the KP Directory mailbox shared an email about a math information session hosted by the MCPPTA Gifted Education subcommittee. These are volunteer parents that presented an overview of upcoming math changes. Maryland has adopted new math standards affecting all schools statewide, and MCPS is reviewing its math curriculum and issuing an RFP as its contracts with Eureka (elementary) and Intelligent Math (middle school) expire. As a result, MCPS may be implementing new standards and a new curriculum at the same time.

While the policy was approved last spring, implementation begins next school year and will impact all grades K–12. Awareness appears limited, MCPS held a session in December that was reportedly not well attended.

MCPS is now hosting a second information session this Thursday, February 5, focused on the Numeracy Development Framework for Pre-K through grade 8 (a component of the new policy). The meeting was included in last week’s “Things You Need to Know” email, though it required scrolling and clicking through to find details. The MCCPTA Curriculum Committee has reshared the information below.

I’m also including the MCPS math site link which shares materials from the December meeting which focused on the overview of the changes: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/curriculum/math/

If anyone has the slides from last week’s info session, please share (I can also post them once I locate them).

Thanks,
Elaine

View MSDE Math Policy in Advance
MSDE has released a Math Policy that reimagines how students become college and career ready.  One part of the Math Policy requires the implementation of the Numeracy Development Framework.  This identifies competencies for PreK-8 mathematics that students need to know each year.  If you are interested in viewing the framework in advance, you can use this link for direct access. Come join the PreK-12 Math Team on Thursday, February 5, from 6:30-7:45 on Zoom.
