Hi Pascal,
Here is a template for a safety plan which we’ll be using for the orienteering championships in July plus the one we used locally for the BC orienteering championships in 2019.  For some reason I don’t have a copy of the RTM safety plan document.  This might help when making any changes to the RTM safety plan.

Also, the event doctor has made the following recommendations with regard to Covid safety, aid stations and refreshments.  Also, I’ve attached the master map showing where each of the timing controls need to be placed and the number of each units and the number required for that location.

Jim

It must be recognized that presently there are no restrictions for sporting events (Alberta). Thus you should provide exactly what you were going to prior to Covid. If you had water controls, these should still be in place. This is a safety measure and we would never want someone to be dehydrated especially when there are no current restrictions. I also want to respect that individuals may feel uncomfortable and thus we also want to reassure them that we are taking more precautions than usual without compromising their safety in the woods.

However: to ensure that everyone feels safe, I would suggest the following adjustments

  1. Everyone be encouraged to carry their own water. There will be water controls but who has handled the water jugs is not certain, thus orienteers can choose depending on their comfort.
  2. Anyone with Covid symptoms should not attend the competitions site. To ensure that this is respected, we would offer a full refund should anyone have symptoms.(if you want extra safety, we can ask everyone prior to the comp although this will be difficult to implement)
  3. We have hand sanitizers at the last line of the start, in the finish/assembly areas and all around the restrooms. Also as people come off the shuttle bus.
  4. We have water at the finish (or assembly area). However this will be individual cups filled by a volunteer who is using safe standards (ie: no self serve)
  5. If there is going to be food, it will be individually wrapped (eg; granola bars, bananas). We can spread them out on a table so that you only touch one.
  6. We return the maps as the finishers cross the line. In other words, we do not collect them. This will avoid more handling of the maps and increase safety to both competitors and organizers. We would stress that we want to respect that the maps should not be shared or viewed by competitors that have not yet started. We encourage that orienteers will honour the spirit of competition and fairness.
  7. We can have masks available at the finish/assembly area for those who want them.
