Hi Brittany,

I think that should be okay! You might just have to sign a waiver for your child. I've cc'd our organizing committee who can confirm.

Hey there,

There is a local Kimberley mom/baby hiking club and myself and some other moms were hoping to do the 20km trek with babies in an Osprey children’s hiking backpack. They are fully harnessed in via chest harness and legs are secure via leg holds. They will not be leaving the backpack for any stent of the race as they can’t walk. Is there any rules against carrying a baby? I couldn’t find this online. I feel like Kimberley and this race is very family focused but thought I would double check before we all register.

Thanks so much

Britt

Hello,

Thanks for the reply. A waiver sounds completely fine. I will wait for their confirmation.

Thank you

Hi Britt. This is Pascal, the race/safety director. This is fantastic and we do love seeing ALL generations participating! A couple of questions that I need to ask without making any assumptions.

Has everyone covered a similar distance with this harness setup?

Has anyone in the group completed the route, even without a harness and baby?

I’ll mention this next part under the assumption no one took part last year and also hasn’t completed the loop, which will give context to the questions above.

Last year was a memorable year for the weather. Constant downpour led to colder than normal conditions and slippery terrain especially on the backside where the talus slopes are. We do have Kimberley Search and Rescue stationed at each aid station but it is still remote on the backside once you leave the ski area.

My goal is first to keep everyone safe and that the experience is within everyone’s ability or comfortably outside of it. So, as long as everyone is prepared for the challenge, knows that a finish isn’t guaranteed (we have to get our volunteers out of there in a reasonable time) and are aware of the risks then I’m good with it!

Hello Pascal,

Thank you for your email.

Everyone who will participate (I imagine there will only be a few) has done this distance before however most of us have not done this distance with this backpack set up as we were pregnant during last hiking season.

During the spring we will be training for this distance with the set up, so will ensure we are comfortable well in advance. We plan to do the route prior to race day, once the snow melts.

I have not completed this race before but have done equally challenging hikes my entire life so feel well equipped for the challenge.

I appreciate you mentioning last years memorable weather. If there were to be rain or extreme hot temperatures we would forfeit our tickets to ensure our little ones are safe.

I looked at race times of the trek previous years which is around 3 hours or slightly less. What is the maximum time one can take to complete it? This will help us with our training, if anyone is falling well below this, they will be encouraged to cheer us on instead.

Thanks so much

Hi Brittany!

Fantastic! I look forward to seeing the group on the start line! We would appreciate everyone to have made it through aid station 2 (Horsebarn Valley) about 12 km from the start by 11 am to ensure a finish by around 1 pm, so it gives lots of time to finish. We want to ensure our volunteers at the first two aid stations can leave by 1pm.

All the best with your training!
