Hello,

I recently joined this mailing list to participate in KiCAD development specifically footprints and schematic symbols. I have a part that I would like to work on, the APDS-9190 Proximity Sensor from Broadcom/Avago. It is a digital proximity sensor that has two photodiodes and an IR LED.
My question is: would a symbol for the APDS-9190 go under Sensors->Optical or Sensors-> Proximity. From a form factor perspective, it is more like one of the ambient light sensors from the APDS line that are already in Sensors->Optical but technically it only measures proximity, not ambient light.
I am open to any other suggestions you may have. I have been familiarizing myself with the KLC and hope to start work on the symbol soon.

Best Regards,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

The developers mailing list is more for the software development of KiCAD. You can already download and import the APDS-9190 from https://componentsearchengine.com/part-view/APDS-9190/Avago%20Technologies

Hello Kevin,

I'm one of the KiCad librarians. Thank you for asking to contribute to
KiCad's libraries. Our library development happens on Gitlab, and
questions like this are best handled in a merge request submitted to
https://gitlab.com/kicad/libraries/kicad-symbols with your proposed symbol.

To answer your question: symbols in the library are grouped by function,
so this should go into Sensor_Proximity.

I just noticed someone else misunderstood your question and directed you
to a place where you can download poorly-made symbols automatically
converted to KiCad. However, they are correct to note that this is a
mailing list about software development of the KiCad application itself,
and most of the people working on libraries will not see things you
write here.

Again, thank you for your willingness to contribute, and if you have
further questions, feel free to reply to me off-list as well.

Hi,

sorry for yet another non-relevant message to the dev list (the email
address is removed in the list), but as a friendly notice I believe the
sensor is EOL.

This is according to digikey, mouser and personal experience with the
manufacturer EOLing most (or all) of the sensors in this package.

The manufacturer website (broadcom) wrongly claims the product is
active. I have the same experience with APDS-9960, which I have official
EOL notice for and the site still says Active.

(Specilation) I believe the TCS34xxx series is going to replace all the
APDS eventually, I recommend looking into these. They're all 1.8V
devices, but the I2C interface is 3.3V tolerant.

Cheers,
Ladislav
