 HI KICAD devs

What is your suggested dev platform for Kicad ?

I have read : https://dev-docs.kicad.org/en/build/linux/

I will put it in a VM for my Kicad work

I have no preference, so please suggest what is likely to be the least difficult to get all dependencies satisfied and code built etc

I am most at home with Debian Linux. But Ubuntu is fine also. For me Debian tends to get out of date and have mixes of stable, release, testing branches all in at once to make things work .

I'm familiar with wxWidgets (from a Python aspect) and C++, and Linux, Codelite. I am not a strong GIT user, but I will learn to be....

regards

Hi,

I'm a KiCad user and a software dev. I recommend Debian stable. You can install all dependencies very easy. And you can use vscode for developement.

Hi Glen,

Debian or Ubuntu are both fine choices.  The one thing to be aware of is that modern Ubuntu turns on Wayland by default, and Wayland has issues that cause KiCad bugs / certain features to not work properly.
In both cases, you will need to use a newer version of wxWidgets (3.2, the newer the patch release the better) than the stable version packages.  For Ubuntu we provide these (including development packages) in our PPA.  For Debian, you can get these from the unstable repos.

You can still use and develop KiCad on Wayland, but just be aware that some things don't work.

Thanks for the input. OK, Debian it is. I'm not a big fan of Ubuntu. too much GUI fluff.

Hi Glen,

Fedora 39 is an alternative. I use that.

Appreciate the Wayland points. Years ago Wayland was the next cool thing but seems to not have gone far ? NVidia compatibility ?  I am 100% AMD shop here- AMD Ryzen, Radeon graphics. I will never buy another Intel box after Intel dropped the Edision project 2 years after  after promising minimum 10 year availability....... Not ever.
All Xorg/X11  boxes here.
