Gordon F. Langille
September 16, 1931 - January 19, 2026
Gordon Frederick Langille of Hampton, beloved husband and devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 19, 2026, at the age of 94.
The son of Stedman S. and Evelyn B. (neé Peters) Langille, Gordon was born in Boston on September 16, 1931. Raised in Watertown, Massachusetts, Gordon joined the Marines (1st Marine Division) at the tender age of 17. He was sent off to war in Korea, facing sub-zero temperatures in the decisive battle at Chosin Reservoir, and receiving shrapnel wounds to his head that stayed with him for the rest of his life. His combat record includes multiple honors for bravery and heroism, including a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star.
Upon leaving the Marines, he married Barbara Ann Connor and together they raised a rambunctious family of four boys. In the early days, Gordon worked at a mattress factory, and then became a fireman where he helped save more than a few lives. In 1953, he joined the Air Force and served overseas in France and Germany (at one point, living in a farmhouse with dirt floors and an assortment of rabbits). Gordon and Barbara got to enjoy touring through Europe with four young sons in tow. Upon returning to the U.S. in 1966, the family settled in Hampton where Gordon was assigned to Langley Air Force Base as a jet engine mechanic. When he retired from the Air Force, he continued working as jet engine mechanic in civil service at Norfolk Naval Air Station for 16 years, retiring for good in 1996.
Gordon had widely varying interests including military history, genealogy, fishing, scouting, ham radio, and model airplanes – but Family was everything to him. He was so proud of his kids, even if he didn’t tell them. After raising his own family, he took enormous pride in serving as a babysitter, chauffeur, and fast food purveyor to his grandchildren (and later his great-grandchildren), picking them up at school and ferrying them all over town.
Gordon is survived by his wife of 72 years, Barbara of Hampton; two sons – Michael Langille (Debbie) of Hampton, and David Langille of Cobbs Creek; grandchildren Gordon Langille (Susie) of Burien WA; Daniel Langille (Rosa) of Bremerton WA; Sharon Wedding (Drew) of Gloucester Point; Karen Janowski (Erek) of Gloucester; David Langille, Jr., of Hampton; Chris Langille of Hampton; Joey Langstaff of Williamsburg; and Ben Langille (Destiny) of Hinesville GA. Great-grandchildren include Dylan, Kylee, Fred, Erek, Karlynn, Emily, Ryder, Addilyn, Chris, and Jordyn.
He was preceded in death by his oldest son, Walter, and his youngest son, Christopher, as well as his sisters, Hope and Phyllis, and his brother, Richard. Gordon was deeply loved, cherished, and cared for by Donna Langille of Hampton, and Ellen Langille of Mount Dora FL.
The family will receive visitors at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home in Hampton on Saturday, January 31, between 3:30 pm and 5:30 p.m. Full military honors, including a flag presentation and a gun volley, will be presented at 5:30 p.m.
