Fred Allen Brewer
January 28, 1934 – February 27, 2025
Fred Allen Brewer, age 91, of Virginia Beach, Virginia passed away on Thursday, February 27, 2025.
Mr. Brewer was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Thomas (“C.T.”) Brewer and Jeannette Brewer as well as brothers Jack and Bobby Brewer.
Survivors include his loving wife, Edwina Carroll Brewer; their three sons, Fred A Brewer, Jr (Alicia), Michael Edwin Brewer (Kelly) and Bradford Troy Brewer (April); 7 grandchildren: Matthew Brewer (Erin), Brad Brewer (Mandy), Mike Brewer (Danielle), Daniel Brewer (Danielle), Patrick Brewer (Liên), Lauren Wagenbrenner and Amanda Williams (Brandon). Also, seven great grandchildren : Abigail, Cecilia, Lenora, Madelyn, Lily, Luna and Paz; as well as a sister, Bessie Jenkins and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Brewer (aka Freddie, Dad, Pop, and Papa Freddie) was a graduate of Maury High School in Norfolk, Class of 1952.
He retired in 1998 after a 46-year career with Hofheimer’s Shoes, Inc.
Most of that time was spent as a Store Manager, most notably at the Virginia Beach location on Laskin Road. Mr Brewer also managed Hofheimer’s locations at Wards Corner, as well as Pembroke, Lynnhaven, and Coliseum Malls.
During his early years with the company, he found time to serve in the United States Marine Corps Reserve and was Honorably Discharged in 1957.
Mr. Brewer was a long-time member of Kempsville Masonic Lodge #196 and the Khedive Shrine.
Freddie was the quintessential family man.
And that adventure began on November 29th, 1953 when he married Edwina Odell Carroll. Their first (and by some accounts, favorite 🙂) child was born a year later. And by 1962, there were three of us.
In 1961, Freddie & Edwina built their forever home in Kempsville and continued raising their young family.
Dad treated us kids the same way he treated everyone . . . with his characteristic easygoing temperament, patience, and a great sense of humor. Of course, we knew he had a firm hand if necessary (ever see the size of those hands ?) It was never necessary.
Throughout it all, we knew we were loved. And ~~ no question ~~ he loved and respected our Mother.
Freddie really enjoyed his children and was proud of them.
And later, PAPA Freddie was thrilled to have grandchildren. It meant the family events were bigger, louder, and more entertaining than ever. Especially at Christmas time. And especially on Christmas Eve! 🎅🏻
Dad and Mom were married for over 71 years.
They first met about 76 years ago. Freddie was working at the PURE Service Station on the corner of 26th and Church Street in Norfolk. That day, Edwina pulled in because she needed air in her tires . . . and HE was the man for the job! I asked her recently what was she driving back then?
“My bike!” Really, Mom? 🙄
And just a few years later, they were married at Tabernacle Baptist Church. Ages 17 and 19. Much too young. It will never work, they said. “They” had not a clue. It worked for over seven decades.
So many stories, so little space and time to tell ‘em. And we realize, Dad, that it’s time for us to let you go. Time for you to rest. But, don’t worry. We’ll take good care of Mom. You know . . . keep the air in her tires and such.
With Love Forever,
Your Family
The service will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

Winfred Morris Hudgins
Winfred "Win" Morris Hudgins, 91, passed away on Wednesday, March 4, 2026. Born on June 26, 1934, he was the son of the late John and Nettie Hogge Hudgins. Winfred carried the warmth of his upbringing in Maryus, Virginia, with cherished memories of his grandparents and childhood friends. Known as the "Speeder" in his younger days, he once outran a state trooper, the trooper knew who he was and went to his father and gave him a tongue lashing. A graduate of Achilles High School, Winfred found great joy in mastering the saxophone and violin. He began his career at the James River Ferry, operated by the Virginia Department of Transportation, before transferring to the George P. Coleman Bridge. In 1953, Winfred married Marie Agnor, the love of his life. After raising their family, they turned their shared love of nature into a successful nursery and florist. Together, they built a thriving business, cultivating beauty for their community. Hudgins Nursery & Garden Center, remains a lasting testament to their hard work and dedication.
Winfred's legacy of love continues through his children: Dana Black (Don), Mary Raddin, and Michael Hudgins (Becky). He was a proud and devoted grandfather to Erin Black Dickerson (Matthew), Lily Black, and Zachary Phillips. His heart and home were further enriched by his blended family, Danielle, Nathan, and Matt; four great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. An only child, "Win" hit the jackpot marrying into Marie's chaotic, loving family of 12 siblings. He was dubbed as "odd man out." He cherished his "outlaws," holding a special place in his heart for their lifelong love, support, and teasing. He is survived by his three remaining partners-in-crime: Ann A. Jones, Sandra A. Yoemans, and Michael L. Agnor.
Winfred has reunited with those who went before him: his beloved wife of 63 years, Marie A. Hudgins; his son, David Hudgins (and wife Delia); his son-in-law, Bruce Raddin, and nine predeceased outlaws. Together, they remain in the hearts of the family they built and the many lives they touched.
Winfred was a member of Beech Grove Baptist Church and a founding member of Gloucester Point Baptist Church. He was a member of Achilles Lodge #281 AF&AM, the Urbanna Royal Arch Chapter 59, a Life Member of Khedive Shrine Temple, and Past President of the Tidewater Shrine Club.
We are eternally grateful to Wanda Fletcher who brought warmth, laughter, and gentle care into his daily life and gave peace of mind during a difficult journey. Deep appreciation is given to the Riverside Hospice Care team who cared for him during his final days.
The family will receive friends at Hogg Funeral Home on Sunday, March 8, 2026 from 2:00 – 3:00 pm. The funeral service, officiated by Reverend Richard Croxton, will be held in the chapel of Hogg Funeral Home on Monday, March 9, 2026 at 11:00 am. Interment will follow in Rosewell Memorial Garden with Masonic Rites at the graveside. In memory of Win, memorial contributions may be made to Beech Grove Baptist Church at PO Box 468, White Marsh, VA 23183. Services under the direction of Hogg Funeral Home.
