Jerry Thomas Kerns was born on August 10, 1938, in Huntersville, North Carolina. He passed away at home on March 30, 2026, with his family by his side.
Jerry proudly served his country in the United States Army Reserves and was honorably discharged in 1965.
Jerry held membership in the Masonic Fraternity for 50 years.
Jerry was always a strong athlete and played varsity football, basketball, and baseball while at Jones Central High School in Trenton, North Carolina. After graduation, he was chosen to try out for a minor league baseball team, the Charlotte Hornets. He did not make the team, but was very proud to have had the opportunity to try.
In 1961 he began his career with Virginia Tractor, a Caterpillar Dealership. He began as a heavy equipment and marine mechanic. He was promoted to Service Manager and later became Manager of Virginia Tractor Marine Facility on the Elizabeth River. He completed his career as a CAT Engine and Generator Salesman.
Jerry built his love of sports into his life during all of the seasons of the year. He grew up hunting with his North Carolina friends and continued making hunting trips, adding new friends, made in Virginia, hunting deer and elk, usually in the fall season. However, playing golf was a year round passion, no matter the weather. Once introduced to the game by his father-in-law, Jerry was hooked! Over the years, the Ocean View Golf Course became a regular meeting place for activity and friendship. When not participating in sports, Jerry followed his favorite teams as they played on television, the UNC Tar Heels, Basketball and Football, and the Washington Redskins/Commanders Football. March Madness was a favorite tournament, and this year he has the very best seat of all.
Jerry learned something else that he held on to from his father-in-law, a summer garden planted and harvested by hand. Helping in Bob’s garden gave him the knowledge and love for the idea of gardening on his own, and forever after he had a summer garden that produced enough to share with family and friends.
Jerry was an immersed believer in Christ and committed to his family. They felt that love and commitment in terms of safety, protection, and provision. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rea; daughters Kelly (Brian), and Jerri (Mike); sister Joyce; sisters-in-law Johnnie and Nancy; grandchildren Joshua and Chloe. He is pre-deceased by his brothers Jimmy and Jeffery, mother Willie Mae, and father Thomas Ray.
Family and Friends are welcome to attend the Funeral Service being held at 11:00am, on April 21, 2026, at Avalon Church of Christ, 844 Woodstock Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23464, with a Luncheon and Celebration of Life to follow in the church’s Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, or St Jude’s Research Hospital, or your charity of choice.
I have been informed that Noble Thomas Hope passed away on January 31, 2026.
Please keep the family in your prayers.
All the best,
