Landis Neal
Landis Neal, 90, of Camden County, North Carolina, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Thursday, April 2, 2026.
Born in Engelhard, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Edward Everett Neal and Mattie Leigh Spencer Neal. A 1953 graduate of Great Bridge High School, he was a talented athlete who set many school records and became the first graduate to sign a professional baseball contract, joining the New York Yankees farm league in 1953 before attending spring training with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1954. In 1955, Landis joined the U.S. Army, served in Germany, and played on Army baseball and football teams before receiving a telegram in 1957, recalling him to the Cardinals organization in Daytona, Florida. He later worked for Fruehauf Trailer Corporation, where he retired after 33 years of faithful service. A Master Mason, Landis was a member of Great Bridge Lodge No. 257 A.F. & A.M., Khedive Shrine Temple, the Chesapeake Shrine Club and the Khedive Cameros. He was also a member of Camden United Methodist Church, the Great Bridge Lions Club, and the Chesapeake Sports Club, where he was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Most of all, Landis will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. To his daughters, he was a first love, a mentor, and a pillar of strength and stability who captured their hearts at first glance, through gentle words, and a knowledge that he would never let go.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 67 years, Vivian Pugh Neal; daughters, Terree Neal, Vickie N. Williams (Gary) and Robin N. Tucker (Billy); grandchildren, Raven T. Thompson (Jordan), Ali W. Wickwire (Austin), Skylar R. Tucker, Neal E. Williams (Brittany), Jordan L. Tucker (Meghan); great-grandchildren, Liam Thompson, Vance Thompson and Palmer Thompson.
A celebration of Mr. Neal’s life will be conducted at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 8, 2026 at Briggs Funeral Home and Crematory, 1748 Battlefield Blvd, S., Chesapeake. The family will receive friends during a reception following the service.
