🎵 Fantasia The Sorcerer’s Apprentice 🎵

This enchanting piece, composed by French composer Paul Dukas in 1897, is a symphonic poem based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s 1797 poem of the same name. The music tells the story of an apprentice sorcerer who, left alone to complete chores, decides to enchant a broom to help. However, the apprentice loses control of the broom and chaos ensues.

The music is descriptively programmatic, closely following the events described in the Goethe poem. It introduces four main themes: one for The Water; one for The Broom; one for The Apprentice; and one for The Sorcerer. The themes of the apprentice and the broom dominate this piece.

Fun Fact: Paul Dukas composed "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" in 1897. While the piece enjoyed some recognition before, its inclusion in Walt Disney's 1940 film Fantasia with Mickey Mouse as the apprentice propelled it to worldwide fame.
