However, it gained immense popularity in its purely orchestral form after being performed at the 1867 Paris World’s Fair. 🎼 The orchestra is excited to present “Four Dances from West Side Story” by Leonard Bernstein, a vibrant suite that captures the essence of the iconic musical. This arrangement, crafted by Ian Polster, brings to life the dynamic energy and emotional depth of Bernstein’s original score.

✨ Fun Fact: Did you know that “West Side Story” is a modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”? Set in the mid-20th century New York City, it tells the story of two rival gangs, the Jets and the Sharks, and the tragic love story of Tony and Maria. Bernstein’s music brilliantly blends classical, jazz, and Latin rhythms, making it a timeless masterpiece.

🎼 The exhilarating “Sabre Dance” from the ballet Gayaneh by Aram is renowned for its fast-paced, energetic rhythm and has become one of the most recognizable works in classical music.

✨ Fun Fact: Did you know that the “Sabre Dance” was originally composed as part of a celebratory scene in the ballet, where dancers showcase their skill with sabres? It has since transcended its ballet origins, appearing in numerous films, TV shows, and even figure skating routines. Its catchy, urgent melody has made it a staple in popular culture, often used to convey a sense of frantic activity or urgency.

🎼 Our next highlight is the enchanting “Waltz No. 2” by Dmitri Shostakovich. This piece, part of the Suite for Variety Orchestra No.1, is known for its elegant and slightly melancholic melody, making it a favourite in both concert halls and film scores.

✨ Fun Fact: Did you know that “Waltz No. 2” gained widespread popularity after being featured in Stanley Kubrick’s film 'Eyes Wide Shut'? Despite its title, the piece is not a traditional waltz but rather a unique blend of classical and jazz elements, showcasing Shostakovich’s versatility as a composer.

🎼 “Danzón No. 2” by Arturo Márquez is a vibrant and rhythmic celebration of the traditional Cuban dance, the danzón, which has become an integral part of Mexican musical culture.

✨ Fun Fact: Did you know that “Danzón No. 2” was inspired by Márquez’s visit to a ballroom in Veracruz, Mexico? The piece captures the elegance and passion of the dance, with its rich orchestration and infectious rhythms.
