Welcome back with Pomp and Circumstance!

Dearest Loyal Subjects,

After our highly successful and swashbuckling ‘Treasure Hunt’ concert, we are excited to begin preparations for our second concert of 2025, ‘Majestic Kingdoms’. This concert will include all things regal, with a collection of works ranging from well-known pop anthems to classical favourites. We hope you will be able to join us on Sunday 31st August for another wonderful afternoon.

The first piece of music that will be included in our upcoming program is the majestic Pomp and Circumstance. The tune that sent Edwardian concertgoers into a frenzy still makes mortarboards fly: Edward Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 burst onto the scene in Liverpool on 19 October 1901, so electrifying the crowd that Sir Henry Wood had to play it twice more—“the only time in Prom history an orchestral item got a double encore.” Its soaring trio became “Land of Hope and Glory,” sung at King Edward VII’s 1902 coronation and now a fixture at the Last Night of the Proms and just about every English-speaking graduation.

American wind-band titan Alfred Reed thickened Elgar’s orchestration in his celebrated transcription—adding flute octaves, beefing up the low reeds, and keeping the jubilant da capo repeat that lets audiences (and graduates) belt out the tune a second time. Expect pageantry, nostalgia, and a final cymbal-crash worthy of a stadium!

Keep an eye out via email or on our social media pages for more information regarding the next concert
