Subject: Washington Birthday Parade information
To:
CC: George Washington Birthday Celebration Committee <gwbirthd...@gmail.com>
Hello everyone and thank you for registering to participate in the upcoming George Washington Birthday Parade on Saturday, February 14. We are looking forward to having each of your units participate—over 55 total!
Please note that the Order of March for the parade, which will include your unit’s gathering space, will be emailed no later than Tuesday, February 10 along with necessary vehicle permits. Registration only closed on Friday and we are still waiting for some organizations to complete their unit info survey. Please hold questions about the Order of March until after February 10. We appreciate your patience as the volunteer committee works to ensure space for all of the amazing floats, performance groups, and more.
We know you are anxious to share information with your organization. The following will not change regardless of your exact gathering point:
- Arrival Time
- Unit Leaders—12:30 p.m. check-in with their parade marshal at their assigned block
- Vehicles in parade—12:30-12:50 p.m. arrive at assigned block. All vehicles should be in place by 1 p.m. for safety of parade participants walking in parade.
- All others—1 p.m. begin gathering with your unit leader at your assigned block.
The parade begins promptly at 2 p.m., so all units should be ready before then.
- Parking
- Only units with vehicles or who requested parking for oversized vehicles will receive a permit that will allow them to move through the police barricades to the assembly area.
- We recommend carpooling as parking in Old Town will be tight on parade day. The attached map includes four parking garages within walking distance of the assembly area. All will be accessible until 1 p.m., when the parade route begins closing to traffic. If a police barricade blocks the way, pull up and tell the police where you are going, that you are part of the parade, and you promise not to access your car until the parade is complete.
- Parade Route
Due to the impending construction of City Hall and Market Square, the parade route and assembly area has moved. Also, the Market Square parking garage will be closed.
The Farmer’s Market is now in Royal Street alongside Market Square and will be closed between Cameron and King when you arrive for assembling.
- Plan your parade exit strategy in advance:
- Please take group photos before the parade begins, not at end point. We need groups to continue exiting and be aware of moving traffic at end point, and they will not be permitted to stop for a photo.
- Any vehicles that do not need to unload passengers will be exiting the parade area by turning east on Duke Street.
- Any vehicles with passengers that need to unload will be unloading between Wolfe and Gibbon Streets before exiting out of the parade area.
- Once a vehicle has exited the parade area, they will not be permitted to return for the safety of our walkers.
- Walkers will be encouraged to regroup on Wolfe Street before exiting the parade area on the sidewalks. Please have a plan in place for meeting parents or rides.
We hope you find this information helpful for your organizations so they can begin planning. Again, the exact location for your unit’s gathering point will be emailed no later than February 10.
Sincerely,
Michele
