Dear Ravi,
I had consciously kept away from the debate on MH and bioethics you had started following book review of 'Malignant' in Lancet. Most of our bioethicists conventionally avoid role of 'Spirituality' in our professions. Latter to me is integral to all professional pursuits including medicine. Spirituality thus becomes synonymous with ethics and humane practice of medicine. No work can be bereft of ethics and what gives it character is the fact how it is done.
"A Kabir working on the loom or a Gandhi spinning the Charkha helps to raise the status of humble loom and Charkha. On the other hand a greedy priest or a corrupt politician lowers the status of high calling of the priest or politician"-Swami Ranganathananda.
You can substitute priest and politician with doctor or engineer with out changing the core message.
