Today I had the unpleasant experience of trying to get J working on a
new device.

Problem 0: I used the windows Edge browser to download it. I do not
know how much of this was a consequence of that choice.

Problem 1: Edge did not want to download the J installer. I had to
"Keep" the download and then it still did not want to download the
installer. I had to select a dropdown option on the delete button to
get it to work.

Problem 2: The machine's antivirus (mcafee) immediately "neutralized"
the "threat" imposed by j.dll by removing it. I have not yet figured
out how to prevent this from occurring, nor have I figured out how to
reverse this action.

I imagine other people might also have been struggling with these issues.

If you disable mcafee temporarily will the Edge download work
properly? And once J is installed, can you enable mcafee and still run
J?

The "keep the download" issue is independent of mcafee.

The mcafee issue kicks in whenever mcafee is running.

To retain j.dll, I had to open an option in the mcafee interface (an
icon which was cleverly documented with no label that I could see - it
looked like a square made up of four smaller squares), scroll down to
the bottom of the revealed options and select "Quarantine". This let
me remove j.dll from its quarantine.

Also, to avoid future recurrence of this issue, I went to the "run
time scanning" option which was a bit above the Quarantine option and
requested that mcafee leave it alone. (This approach did not work
until after I had removed j.dll from quarantine.) I am not sure that
this step was necessary, but I doubt I should completely trust mcafee.

Thanks,
