For those interested in J on Android 15 or above, it's available on the J beta URL. The install warns that the product was built for an earlier release. The feature for file access which this release requires first appeared in Android 11. I have not tested anything earlier than Android 12.

Once installed
  Open Settings

   Search for   all files access

   Scroll to   J Android beta

Slide the indicator to the right

J should now have access to all files

except those for other apps in   Android/data

Android 16 became available for my phone yesterday. I installed it this morning, and J continued to work correctly. To ensure there are no more issues, I uninstalled it and reinstalled it from scratch. Including the steps above as access is deleted with the uninstall.

Hi Paul,

Thank you for mentioning explicitly where to find the "all file access" permission; I couldn't find it.

The beta also works fine on Android 14, in case anyone wonders.

Best regards,

Jan-Pieter

Thanks from me too!
I've recently moved to a new phone that uses Android 16 and hadn't realised that only the 9.7 beta will install on newer versions of Android.

Thanks - there was some earlier correspondence which suggested (to me -
perhaps unintentionally)  that it wasn't safe to try installing betas in Android,
given I'd found it so tricky to achieve a usable J.

My fairly modest Motorola G13 has Android 14.   So am I safe to install J 9.7 beta?
Is it actually necessary to uninstall the current one?  (I think I'd prefer not, so as not
to have to remember what I did last time.)

I'm currently running (typed by hand!):
Engine: JVERSION 9.6.3/j64arm/android
Build: commercial/2025-04-05T16:47:34
Library: 9.6.14
J Android:1.4.87/14/34
Platform: Android 64(arm64-v8a)

Thanks,
Mike

Jandroid release and jandroid beta are 2 different apps. They can coexist.
