I've a similar experience.

After performing the j9.6 current upgrade in jconsole, jqt will not
start. From jconsole,

JVERSION

Engine: j9.6.0-beta25/j64avx2/windows

Platform: Win 64

Not an expert, but it appears that I don't have the correct qt version available?  The same test code runs correctly on j9.5.

You could try downloading jqt from

https://www.jsoftware.com/download/j9.6/qtidedev/

And the qt libs from

https://www.jsoftware.com/download/j9.6/qtlibdev/

Then replace jqt and the Qt folder with the new versions. 

You may need to run macOSfix.command  to avoid the macOS security restrictions.
