Hi All,

I am in a new educational developer position supporting faculty and graduate students' SoTL. As part of this role, I'm taking over as primary investigator (PI) on a blanket IRB agreement our office has to support faculty SoTL projects. For folks outside of the US, IRB is the university-based ethics board that reviews any human-subjects research before it can proceed.

This agreement predates me and most others in my office, so I am investigating its effectiveness at incubating new SoTL projects. I would love to hear from anyone else who has or has had a blanket project approved by their institutional ethics review body and who adds sub-projects in SoTL under that blanket. Would you be willing to share how that process worked for you? What were the benefits of this model? What were the drawbacks? And do you have any tips for easing folks' navigation of these sometimes-overly-bureaucratic processes as they get started in SoTL?

Thanks in advance!

Sincerely,
Sophia Abbot

Hi Sophia,

I manage an umbrella IRB for SoTL studies that are focused on active learning. Feel free to contact me off list if you'd like to talk.

Best,
Jennifer
