Associate EditorTeaching & Learning Inquiry: The Journal of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

Applications Due: February 28, 2026

The ISSOTL Publications Committee seeks applications for two associate editors for Teaching & Learning Inquiry (TLI). This position reflects ISSOTL’s interest in maintaining a sustainable editorial structure and the journal’s commitment to supporting the professional development of SoTL colleagues around the world.

TLI has established itself as a prominent journal in the field of the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). TLI features original research and commentary on SoTL from a wide range of disciplines, and other scholarly works that document or facilitate investigations of teaching and learning in higher education. These may include empirical and interpretive investigations, theoretical analyses, thought-provoking essays, or works employing other genres.

Contingent on successful completion of an introductory training period (March 2026 – August 2026), the associate editor appointment will continue for up to three years, with potential for renewal for a second term. The voluntary position involves meeting tight deadlines and participating in monthly online editorial meetings.

Associate editors work closely with the editorial team (two co-editors, several associate editors, and a production manager) to maintain the journal’s ethos of mentorship and collaboration in making important decisions regarding submissions to the journal. For submissions deemed appropriate for peer review, associate editors assign and work with reviewers to maintain the journal’s ethos and standards, consult with the editorial team in making decisions about submissions, work with authors on subsequent manuscript development where deemed appropriate, and work with the journal’s production manager to finalize manuscripts before publication. Associate editors also engage in enhancing TLI’s international outreach, particularly from regions with relatively limited presence in or engagement with the journal.

Please consider applying if you are looking for a rewarding opportunity to expand your editorial skills, help fellow SoTL scholars develop and publish their work, and contribute to one of the field’s pre-eminent publications. ISSOTL’s Publications Committee, together with the co-editors, will make a selection based on the criteria outlined below.

Please reach out to the Publications Committee Co-Chair – Chris Ostrowdun (c.ost...@leeds.ac.uk) or the current co-editors — Earle Abrahamson (e.abra...@herts.ac.uk) and Jessie L. Moore (jmoo...@elon.edu) — with any questions.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Brief written applications (no more than three, single-spaced pages), as well as a current curriculum vitae (6 pages max) and the names and contact information for two references from the international SoTL community, should be e-mailed to Chris Ostrowdun (c.ost...@leeds.ac.uk), Publications Committee co-chair, no later than February 28, 2026. Applications should outline your reasons for wanting to undertake the role and address the below selection criteria.

The following criteria are essential:

  • Active scholar and reviewer in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL), with prior experience reviewing for Teaching & Learning Inquiry.
  • Passionate about SoTL in higher education and committed to mentoring colleagues and encouraging high-quality scholarly publications in the field.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to work well with others (for example, joint publications, grants, member of a national network), particularly at a distance.
  • Willing to participate in monthly virtual editorial meetings. These may be scheduled outside working hours to accommodate the schedules of an editorial team based in different time zones.
  • Committed to the goals of the journal’s parent organization, the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: https://www.issotl.com.
  • Current member of ISSOTL.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.

In addition, the following criteria are desirable:

  • Experience in editing and publishing and awareness of issues associated with editing an international journal.
  • Familiarity with online manuscript management systems.
  • Ability to take up the position in March 2026.

Shortlisted applicants will interview with the co-editors and have an opportunity to visit with current associate editors to learn more about the role.
