Hello everyone!

Two 3-year PhD positions are available as part of a project run by the Institute of Computational Perception (CP) at the Johannes Kepler University Linz (JKU).

https://www.jku.at/en/institute-of-computational-perception/

Successful candidates will work on a project entitled “Rach3: A Computational Approach to Study Piano Rehearsals”, funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and led by Dr. Carlos Cancino-Chacón. This project presents a multimodal data-driven approach to study piano rehearsal over long periods of time, leveraging current advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning. The central questions of this project concern the strategies pianists employ during practice and the evaluation of performance quality in relation to the final product throughout the rehearsal phase.

The PhD students will be based in CP's offices in Linz or (preferably) Vienna and will enroll in the PhD program at JKU.

Both positions are for a duration of up to 3 years, starting in Fall 2024, providing an excellent work environment, a competitive salary, and comprehensive social security benefits.

Qualifications:

Applicants for the PhD student positions must have a Master's degree in computer science, mathematics, artificial intelligence, or a related field. A musical background (performance and/or theory) is an asset. Applicants must demonstrate professional competence in English.

PhD Student 1:

* Machine learning for music analysis (for symbolic music and/or audio)
* Their research will center around a data-driven exploration of rehearsal piano strategies, emphasizing MIR aspects such as robust music alignment and transcription.

PhD Student 2:

* Machine learning for computer vision, in particular human motion analysis.
* Their research direction involves leveraging ML techniques to establish connections between motion of the arms, hands and fingers (using e.g., automatic pose estimation from video), physiological signals, and musical structure.

The deadline for applications is August 15th, 2024. Applications for both positions should include:

* A cover letter describing your qualifications and interest in the research topic (please apply specifically for one of the positions).
* A CV
* A short research proposal (2-3 pages).
* Contact details for two referees.

Applicants are encouraged to contact us before applying. Please send application documents by email to Carlos Cancino-Chacón (carlos_eduardo...@jku.at) as a single pdf. Students from underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply!

Best,

Carlos
