Hi,

I'm looking for a list of methods used by devices / OS to get IPv6 address (DHCPv6, SLAAC, both). Does anybody have a good pointer ?

Hello Christophe,

The silence is probably a good sign that no such thing exists...

SLAAC is accepted everywhere (and even still some implementations using EUI-64). Most of them also implement RFC 8106 (DNS info in RA).

DHCP is used by Windows (at least) in parallel with SLAAC. DHCP is available on Linux as well but not installed by default AFAIK. DHCP is not supported by Android.

Bottom line: SLAAC is the way to go whether we like it or not (with the changing IPv6 addresses [1]).

Hope this helps but all the above caveats do not help the deployment of IPv6 for sure :-(

Regards

[1] and nowdays, not only IPv6 addresses change daily (at least), the MAC addresses also changes see MADINAS https://datatracker.ietf.org/wg/madinas/about/

Hi Eric,

Thank you for the answer.

Glad to hear SLAAC is (or should be) accepted by all kinds of devices and OS. I was more looking for devices using exclusively DHCP, in case it does exist...

Regards,
C

I haven't come across DHCP-only services (yet)!

Cheers,
Sander
