【 NIH-JSPS Intramural Fellowship Program Overview 】
The NIH-JSPS Intramural Fellowship was created in 1995 to promote bilateral cooperation
between NIH and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) foundation.
This partnership-based program is primarily funded by the JSPS Foundation with NIH host
IC co-funding. JSPS is the largest, government-supported foundation in Japan that provides
fellowships to Japanese scientists.
The NIH-JSPS Intramural Fellowship provides a two-year stipend to Japanese post-docs
to work at NIH intramural labs. For this fellowship cycle up to 8 grants are expected
to be awarded.
【 Duration and Start date for the Fellowship 】
・This is a two-year JSPS-funded and IC-supplemented fellowship (IC host supplement funds
to meet NIH Stipend requirements)
・The Fellowship must begin ON the FIRST day of either January, February, or March of 2025.
【 Eligibility (Must meet ALL requirements) 】
・Must be a Japanese citizen or permanent resident of Japan. Dual Japanese-US citizens ARE eligible
to apply.
・Must have obtained their doctoral degree, equivalent to a Ph.D. on or after April 2, 2019.

【 Application 】
The NIH-JSPS Program application forms (English and Japanese) can be downloaded
from JSPS website at
https://jspsusa.org/wp/kaitoku-nih/application/.
Applicants must complete both forms and submit application package (Japanese and English)
containing the (1) research proposal, (2) statement on previous research, and (3) statement
on the significance of working in the sponsoring NIH lab. Candidate must also submit the certificate
of Ph.D degree. NIH sponsors must provide a Letter of Invitation (see website for details regarding
The NIH IC is not obligated to host an unsuccessful JSPS applicant. The invitation to the lab can
be contingent on receiving the JSPS-NIH Fellowship. However, successful JSPS applicants will require
supplemental funding and health insurance coverage from the NIH IC host lab and the lab chief should
include this in their budget requests to their IC.
