Liwicki
Professor and Head of Subject, Deputy vice-chancellor for
Artificial Intelligence

Abstract:
What if AI was not just a tool, but a reflection of human
creativity itself?
Marcus Liwicki – and a surprise guest from the future – will
attend explore how AI can become a powerful tool for everyone.
Join them on a journey through time to discover how curiosity
and hands-on learning can unlock the full potential of
human-centered AI – today, tomorrow, and beyond.Furthermore,
Marcus will highlight some general AI research directions and
focus in Sweden as well as a few highlights from the
gender-balanced Machine Learning group at LTU, which he leads as
chaired professor.
Biography:
Marcus Liwicki received his M.S. degree in Computer Science from
the Free University of Berlin, Germany, in 2004, his PhD degree
from the University of Bern, Switzerland, in 2007, and his
habilitation degree at the Technical University of
Kaiserslautern, Germany, in 2011. Currently he is chaired
professor in Machine Learning and vice-rector for AI at Luleå
University of Technology. His research interests include machine
learning, pattern recognition, artificial intelligence, human
computer interaction, digital humanities, knowledge management,
ubiquitous intuitive input devices, document analysis, and graph
matching. From October 2009 to March 2010 he visited Kyushu
University (Fukuoka, Japan) as a research fellow (visiting
professor), supported by the Japanese Society for the Promotion
of Science. In 2015, at the young age of 32, he received the
ICDAR young investigator award, a bi-annual award acknowledging
outstanding achievements of in pattern recognition for
researchers up to the age of 40.
Marcus Liwicki is a member of the IAPR and serves as editor or
reviewer for several international journals, including IEEE
Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence and
the International Journal of Document Analysis and Recognition.
He is on the governing board of the International Graphonomics
Society and vice president of IAPR Technical Committee 6. He has
chaired international workshops such as the Automated Forensic
Handwriting Analysis series and DAS 2014, and regularly serves
on program committees and as a reviewer in computer vision,
pattern recognition, and document analysis. Since 2010, he has
organized discussion groups at the Document Analysis and
Recognition Workshops.
