Project Setup - org.apache.cxf.binding.soap.SoapFault: INVALID_TYPE: sObject type 'CustomField' is not supported.

I created a new Project. When trying to anything, I get the error

org.apache.cxf.binding.soap.SoapFault: INVALID_TYPE: sObject type 'CustomField' is not supported.

e.g. when trying to Generate Offline Symbol Table, or saving a file, or trying to run a test

A few things were odd:

a) there was no manifest/package.xml - I created it manually

b) in 'Open Module Settings' nothing was set in the Module SDK. when comparing it to working projects, I saw a bunch of generated ones e.g.:
  IlluminatedCloud (connection/connection)
... but none with a connection for this project.

How do I fix this?

Hi. When this error has occurred in the past -- "sObject type 'CustomField' is not supported" -- it's been because the IC2 connection user did not have adequate permissions for a developer/admin. I'd recommend that you check the user's authorization level and ensure that it can access these types of configuration metadata. Then the OST should generate successfully, and my guess is that the other issues will also be resolved.
