Speaker: Varun Ramanathan Title: An Introduction to the Multiplicative Weights Update method

Abstract: Multiplicative Weights Update (MWU) is a meta-algorithm which has been seen in many areas, from machine learning to game theory. In this talk, I will introduce (and prove bounds on the result of) the multiplicative weights update method, first in a simple and concrete setting, and then in a generalized setting. First years (and students of all years) are encouraged to attend the talk; there are no hard prerequisites and students will take a step towards understanding an approach to solving problems that are as important as paradigms like divide-and-conquer.
