Dear IFMSA family,

It's a great honor to announce that we are opening the call for the IFMSA delegation to the sixty-fourth sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SB 64) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). At first, the sessions will take place in Bonn, Germany, and online, lasting from the 8th of June until the 18th of the same month.

What is the UNFCCC SB?
This is the 64th session of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) and Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA). The objective of these sessions, in general, is to lead technical negotiations on climate change topics, such as adaptation, mitigation, and finance. It serves as a mid-COP negotiation that advances climate action and prepares decisions for adoption by countries. It is smaller than COP and is traditionally held in Bonn, Germany, sometimes with online participation.

What will you gain from becoming part of the IFMSA delegation to SB 64?
  • Enhancing your knowledge and skills on climate change, environment and health advocacy and its relation to all other policies, not just health;
  • Interacting with the delegation and other delegations, including youth delegates, where you can exchange knowledge and join efforts;
  • Meeting national stakeholders from your own country, understanding more about national efforts on climate change and how they can be improved;
  • Representing the voice of 1.5 million medical students towards issues that affect everyone on this planet;
  • Developing your competencies to start your national efforts in your community against climate change.
What is expected from IFMSA's delegates to SB 64?
  • Engagement in all steps of the process - participate in capacitations leading to the event, meaningfully engaging when it's happening and contributing to the report;
  • Availability to attend the full duration of the event or availability with a preference to attend week 1 or week 2;
  • Contribution to all tasks agreed upon with the rest of the delegation during the event;
  • Contribute and fulfill the advocacy plan for SB 64;
Important Notes:
  • IFMSA does NOT provide financial support for the event;
  • The number of delegates depends on the quota assigned by UNFCCC - quite unpredictable!
  • Consider logistics - not only accommodation and transportation, but also availability and internet connection in online settings.
Selection criteria:
  • Requirements as per the bylaws:
    • be a medical student or a student from a healthcare-related field, or not have
      graduated more than 6 months by the time the external meeting starts
    • be a member of a Full or Associate Member Organization
    • not be a member of a National Member Organization that is in violation with the
      IFMSA Constitution and Bylaws
    • have a Candidature Form signed by their NMO President. In the case the applicant is the NMO President, the Candidature Form needs to be signed by another NMO Representative.
  • Evaluation for selection:
    • Motivation
    • Experience in External Affairs
    • Experience in Climate Change and Health issues
    • Follow-up plans
    • Contribution plans to the delegation
    • Availability
How can you apply?
  • Fill in this application form: here
  • Fill in this candidature form that should be signed and stamped by your NMO president: link
  • The application form must be submitted by May 6, 2026, 23:59 GMT
