Special Issue
“From Cloud to Edge: Digital Twin Orchestration and Development in
the 6G Era”

================================================================================
Digital Twins (DTs) are increasingly recognized as a transformative
component of the 6G vision, enabling intelligent, dynamic, and virtual
representations of real-world entities, ranging from autonomous
vehicles to entire urban environments and human users.
Yet, orchestrating DTs at scale in distributed and latency-sensitive
6G infrastructures poses significant challenges. These include the
need for expressive and adaptive DT models, intelligent discovery and
matchmaking across billions of heterogeneous DTs, and flexible
orchestration strategies that span the cloud-edge continuum. Efficient
DT placement and migration at the network edge, as well as the reuse
of DT services, are also essential to ensuring responsiveness and
resource efficiency.
In parallel, emerging technologies such as federated and transfer
learning offer new possibilities for decentralized DT intelligence,
enabling real-time learning while preserving data privacy.
Communication paradigms like Information-Centric Networking (ICN) and
social-aware frameworks inspired by the Social Internet of Things
(SIoT) further contribute to scalable DT interaction, trust, and
cooperation.
Despite growing academic and industrial interest, existing research
efforts remain fragmented across application domains or narrowly
focused on specific technologies. Therefore, this Special Issue is
motivated by the urgent need to consolidate research on the design,
orchestration, and intelligent coordination of DTs in 6G networks,
emphasizing system-level challenges and architectural innovation along
the cloud-edge continuum. The aim is to provide a timely forum to
explore cross-cutting solutions that will underpin scalable,
resilient, and interoperable DT ecosystems in the years ahead.
We welcome original research contributions, visionary perspectives,
system-level implementations, and experimental studies that
collectively advance the field. Topics of interest include, but are
not limited to:
DT modelling languages, architectures, and ontologies
DT lifecycle and state synchronization in real-time systems
Edge-Cloud continuum for DT orchestration
Federated learning and AI-based DT orchestration
Transfer learning and continual learning for DT adaptation
