Hello,

I work at Duality Technologies and am currently looking into analyzer some of our code and found PAPI may be what I need. I want to investigate L1/L2/L3 cache misses and some other low-level perfomance. As a proof of concept I wanted to run PAPI on my Ubuntu 20.04 running on VMware Player. I have found indications that this is possible[1] but after installing on my VM it appears this isn't possible. I've attached the output of papi_avail that indicates none of the HW is accessible.

I would appreciate assistance with setting up my system to work correctly on the VM, eventually I'd be porting this to other platforms.

NOTE - I tried both clone and building papi locally and using the papi supported via the ubuntu apt store i.e. `apt install papi-tools`

Hi Jonathan,

You are lucky because VMware allows the virtualization of some of the performance counters. I don’t think the uncore (L3) is one of them, but you’ll be able to look at some of the others.
