Could you please advise if HYCOM has any intellectual property rights reserved (or license of use) on downloading and using its data base for commercial purposes.

Is there any legal documentation available that confirms that HYCOM data is released under US DOD Distribution A and can be considered as public domain data. We may be able to use that as supporting document to move forward in utilizing the data for our use.

The following is included in all the Navy generated netCDF files on our data server:

        :distribution_statement = "Approved for public release. Distribution unlimited." ;
        :downgrade_date = "not applicable" ;
        :classification_authority = "not applicable" ;
        :institution = "Naval Oceanographic Office" ;

This distribution statement is the usual short form for Distribution A.

I'm not sure if this metadata is preserved if you request a subset (for example), which would be generated on our servers from the original Navy files, but the public release still applies.

Yes, the HYCOM data on the hycom.org data server is available in Public Domain for use.
