We've loaded the temp, salinity, and velocity data from HYCOM grids for 1992 to present into Google Earth Engine:

Example of visualizing one layer of velocity from one day...

Thanks for spearheading this, Kurt!

What are the tds.hycom.org OPeNDAP URLs you are using to create this 1992-present day virtual aggregation?

I also notice that there is a "500 error" in the status section when initially loading the "Water Velocity" workspace layer, but after clicking on "Save/Apply" the error goes away.

Wanted to determine if that's something on our (hycom.org) side we need to address/fix.

I'm looking forward to see how people use this dataset in Earth Engine!

We don't use OPenDAP.  We fetch the netcdf files for each day and convert them to an internal format as tiles for faster lookup.  We then have the tiles stored across a huge number of storage devices.  We do not fetch anything from outside of Google when people work with Earth Engine.

If you'd like to know more, we have a paper:

Gorelick et al 2017, Google Earth Engine: Planetary-scale geospatial analysis for everyone

The http 500 error may have been a transient thing.  I wasn't able to reproduce.  We'll keep an eye out for it repeating.

And, people can add requests for new datasets and vote on (⭐) existing requests using our bug tracker.

Cheers,
-kurt

Hi urt
Can I use this dataset to map ocean current/upwelling/circulation (same term).

Thanks

Hi Shanthi,

Yes - The model has horizontal flow velocity.  It does not have a vertical component.

The Google on the Earth Engine Team subsetted (and routinely updates) the temp, salinity, and velocity data from HYCOM grids for 1992 to Present* into Google Earth Engine:
