Dear Experts,

I am interested in constructing a volumetric white matter mask (optimally comparable between subjects). Hence I have the following questions:

1) I found an old answer (https://www.mail-archive.com/hcp-...@humanconnectome.org/msg00931.html) which uses both ribbon.nii.gz and wmparc.nii.gz. What is the difference between the information contained in those files?

2) Where one can find the meaning of the labels used in ribbon.nii.gz and wmparc.nii.gz?

3) I noticed that these files (ribbon.nii.gz and wmparc.nii.gz) differ between subjects even though they are volumetric and contained in the MNINonlinear folder. What is the reason for that? Is it due to cortical folding or also extends into the subcortical and white matter part?

Best regards,
Romuald

Ribbon is refined by the final surface placement and is a bit more accurate.  FreeSurfer determines these labels, but you should be able to look at them in Connectome Workbench.  These files are subject specific, even if aligned to MNI.

Matt.

Thanks! So the numerical label/text matching is here: https://surfer.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu/fswiki/FsTutorial/AnatomicalROI/FreeSurferColorLUT (if anyone would be looking)
Comparing now ribbon and wmparc in Workbench, I noticed that e.g. thalamus is classified in ribbon as e.g. RIGHT-CEREBRAL-WHITE-MATTER.
Is this standard or one should subtract off these subcortical structures in wmparc from the white matter in ribbon?

Sure, you could separately get the subcortical greymatter structures from the wmparc.  I think that was what the old post was getting at.
