Dear ConnectomeDB Support Team,

I am currently working with the HCP Young Adult dataset and am looking for an efficient way to download T1-weighted structural MRI, fMRI, and DTI data for a specific subset of subjects. At the moment, ConnectomeDB appears to provide downloads only at the level of full subject data packages or modality-specific data collections, but it does not seem possible to customize downloads or selectively retrieve individual files within those packages.

Before proceeding with bulk downloads, I wanted to confirm:
Is there any mechanism—either within ConnectomeDB or via an API—to retrieve only selected files (e.g., T1w, fMRI, and DTI) for a defined list of subjects, rather than downloading the full subject packages?
If selective file access is not available, is there a recommended workflow for downloading the full modality packages for a subset of subjects? For example, a way to pass a subject list into the download tool or to automate downloads without manually selecting packages in the web interface.
Is there currently a REST API, programmatic interface, or direct access to an Amazon S3 bucket or similar cloud storage endpoint for the HCP YA data? If so, could you point me to documentation on how to authenticate and retrieve specific files or directories?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,
Lazar Suciu

Hi,

I assume that you are referring to the recently updated "HCP-Young Adult 2025" data hosted on BALSA?

At this time, there is no functionality to select/retrieve specific files within BALSA -- only the packages.  We hope to add such functionality at some point in the future.

To download the package for only specific *subject*, just use the filters in the "Selected Subjects" section of the UI to select the subset of subjects that you want, and queue up the desired packages in the "Selected Imaging Packages" section of the UI.  You will then get the selected packages for the selected subjects.

Cheers,

-MH

You can enter a list of subjects separated with "|" in the filter at the top of the Subject ID column e.g. 100004|100307 to filter to a subset of subjects or you can use the "Save Custom Subject Group" button and edit the full list of subjects there down to the group you want to download. As Mike described, the filters apply to the imaging packages below and you can choose the imaging packages you want to queue for download.

Best,
Jenn
