fmri concatenated data vs separate packages

Hi,

I am planning to download the fMRI data from HCP-A Release 2 through BALSA and had a question regarding the available download packages.

From the documentation, I understand that the recommended resting-state fMRI dataset is approximately 11 TB, while the task/activation fMRI dataset is about 2 TB. However, I also noticed a combined (concatenated) package containing both resting-state and task fMRI data that is listed as approximately 9 TB.

Could someone clarify what accounts for this difference in storage size? Specifically, does the 9 TB combined package contain all of the files included in the separate resting-state and task fMRI releases, or are certain files omitted, compressed differently, or otherwise reorganized?

The combined package would obviously be much more convenient from a storage perspective, but I would like to make sure that I am not missing any data that might be needed for downstream analyses.

Any clarification or pointers to relevant documentation would be greatly appreciated.

I am conducting a mathematical and connectomics-oriented study focused on identifying subject-invariant and longitudinally stable properties of functional brain connectivity networks.

To avoid making assumptions about preprocessing choices or derived measures, I would like to work as close as possible to the original connectivity representations used in HCP-related analyses.

If available, I would greatly appreciate access to any of the following for a small number of subjects:

1. Functional connectivity matrices (FC), correlation matrices, or pconn files.
2. Resting-state fMRI time series (dtseries or equivalent).
3. Information about the atlas/parcellation used (Glasser, Schaefer, AAL, etc.).
4. Details of the preprocessing pipeline:
   - Pearson vs partial correlation
   - Global signal regression (if applied)
   - Motion correction procedures
   - ICA-FIX or related denoising steps
5. Longitudinal or retest data for the same subjects, if available.
6. Any documentation describing how FC matrices were generated from the original fMRI recordings.

My interest is primarily in spectral, geometric, topological, and graph-theoretic analyses of connectivity structure rather than classification or predictive modeling.

Even a small sample dataset would be extremely valuable for validating the mathematical framework.

The Concatenated package does not contain all the per run files that are in the Resting state and Task packages. Also note that you can filter for a single subject/smaller subject group using the filters in the Selected Subjects section of the release page (Subject ID and Event column or using the Save Custom Subject Group button) so that you can download a much smaller amount of data and browse it before downloading all available subjects/sessions.

These are three different things.  The concatenated datasets are how the denoising is done, but many users only need the final product, which would be the non-concatenated datasets.  That is why they are separate.  There is no “combined” package that contains all three things.

Final clarification regarding HCP-A fMRI packages

Dear Matt and Jean,
Thank you both for the detailed explanations.
Just to make sure I have understood correctly before proceeding with the analyses:
If the objective is to perform analyses on the fully processed and denoised fMRI data at the subject level, without requiring separate run-specific preprocessing outputs (REST1/REST2, AP/PA distinctions, QC snapshots, motion logs, intermediate processing products, etc.), then the files contained in the ConcatFmriRecommended package should be sufficient, particularly the final cleaned and MSMAll-aligned outputs within the fMRI_CONCAT_ALL results directory.
In other words, for downstream analyses based on the final processed time series and derived connectivity/network measures, there would be no additional information required from the RestFmriRecommended package unless one specifically needs run-level analyses or access to intermediate processing stages.
If this understanding is correct, I believe I have everything needed to proceed.

Thank you for the clarification.

For a methodological validation study, I only need a single subject and a single resting-state dtseries file to test a mathematical/connectomic framework.

Would it be possible to point me to a publicly accessible example subject containing either:

  • rfMRI_REST1_AP_Atlas_MSMAll_hp0_clean_rclean_tclean.dtseries.nii

or

  • fMRI_CONCAT_ALL_Atlas_MSMAll_hp0_clean_rclean_tclean.dtseries.nii

for one subject only?

I do not need the full release, just a minimal example dataset sufficient for testing.
