Hi there,

I'm wondering if there's anywhere I can find the details (e.g., equations) of how HCP out-of-scanner behavioral data are being calculated? I can only find some rough descriptions from the data dictionary page (https://wiki.humanconnectome.org/display/PublicData/HCP-YA+Data+Dictionary-+Updated+for+the+1200+Subject+Release) that only says something like "Scoring is based on a combination of accuracy and reaction time" without further elaborations.

Thanks!

Hi Howie,
What out of scanner behavioral data, recognition memory? Are you talking about in-scanner task performance for the tfMRI tasks? Which variable(s) in the Data Dictionary are you looking at?

Best,
Jenn

Hi Jennifer,

Thanks for your response.

I'm talking about the behavioral data collected from the NIH-toolbox and some non-NIH toolbox tasks. I'm specifically interested in the cognition battery, which includes tasks like Flanker, List Sorting, Dimensional Change Card Sort, etc. It seems that the measures (reported in HCP) for most of these tasks are calculated based on both RT and accuracy (and may or may not be age-adjusted), but without very detailed descriptions. Is there anywhere I can get to know more about the details for those calculations?

Best,
Howie

Hi Howie,
Attached is the NIH Toolbox Scoring and Interpretation guide for 2012 which is the version we used for HCP-Young Adult. It has some more information about how instruments calculate scores, some with equations. The scores we report from Toolbox were Unadjusted Scale Scores or Age-Adjusted Scale Scores (indicated in the variable names) with the following definitions:

Unadjusted Scale Score: Participant score is normed to those in the entire NIH Toolbox Normative Sample (18 and older), regardless of age or any other variable, where a score of 100 indicates performance that was at the national average and a score of 115 or 85, indicates performance 1 SD above or below the national average.

Age-Adjusted Scale Score: Participant score is normed using the age appropriate band of Toolbox Norming Sample (bands of ages 18-29, or 30-35), where a score of 100 indicates performance that was at the national average and a score of 115 or 85, indicates performance 1 SD above or below the national average for participants age band.
