Hello everyone,

I am trying to identify parcel overlap between the HCP-MMP1 and Destrieux atlases. I recognize that the workbench has the label resample function that allows me to do this, but I wanted to enquire about -area-surfs vs. -area-metrics for my purposes. Is one preferred over the other? I see the .shape.gii files for midthickness, but I don't see the .surf.gii files that seem to be needed for -area-surfs.

Thanks!

-area-metrics is intended for use with group average data, because group average surfaces lose folding definition and therefore surface area (in some locations more than others).  To avoid this coordinate averaging effect, we compute vertex areas on a group of individuals, and then average those vertex areas together instead.

For individual data, it doesn't matter which argument type you use, but the surface arguments are generally more convenient (they do the same thing, but compute the vertex areas for you without an extra command).
