Hi

I am a graduate student majoring in developmental neurolinguistics from Beijing Normal University, China.
I have several questions about the behavioral data released in HCP development and aging.

The scores of 9-hole pegboard test and grip strength dynamometry test in tlbx-motor01 are confusing.
For example, in tlbx_motor01 of HCP aging, the description of grip_standardsc_dom is 9-Hole Grip Strength Dominant Hand Normative Standard Score, while the description in the data dictionary is Grip Strength Test Uncorrected Standard Scores Dominant hand
Besides, the scores in nih_tlbx_domsc are the same as the msgs_dominanttrial while the former is the 9-Hole Pegboard Dexterity Test Dominant Score and the latter’s description is Grip Strength Test Dominant hand: pounds of force exerted at maximum (to the tenth of a pound), which are totally different. The same problem exists in HCP development.
I hope you can explain the confusion between the scores of these two tasks.

In addition, I found that there is no test for fluid intelligence in HCP aging, what's the reason for this?

Thank you for your assistance, and I am looking forward to receiving your reply!

Hi Yingying,
The information coming from NDA in the behavioral data text files is confusing and shouldn't be used. Please always refer to the Lifespan Behavioral Data Crosswalk for correct information about variables in the hcp_description column.

I am not sure about your second point about the nih_tlbx_domsc dominant hand pegboard and msgs_dominanttrial grip strength scores being the same in both HCA and HCD. I am CC'ing Petra Lenzini about this to see if she has any insights.

Best,
Jenn

Hi Yingying,
HCA did not collect 9-hole Pegboard. One thing that is tricky about NDA elements is that the exact same element name can be used for different instruments, even within the same NDA structure, so for
nih_tlbx_agecsc_dominant nih_tlbx_agecsc_nondom nih_tlbx_domsc nih_tlbx_nondomsc

in HCA you need to also be looking at the "version" column to see that these variables are referring to the grip strength instrument.

Also, 9-hole Pegboard shouldn't be in the Lifespan crosswalk for HCA.  This is a mistake that we will fix for the next release.

For HCD, 11 NDA elements for 9-hole Pegboard are as listed in the HCD tab of the crosswalk.  NDA aliases for these 9-hole Pegboard elements include variables with 'grip' in them for reasons at NDA beyond our project (we think it's a mistake and confusing).

The uncorrected standard score for the dominant hand for both 9-hole Pegboard AND Grip Strength instruments are being mapped to the grip_standardsc_dom variable.  You can distinguish between the two by referring to the instrument in the "version" column.  If you see nonempty grip_standardsc_dom and grip_standardsc_nonom variables and the version says '9-hole' you should think of these as the uncorrected standard scores for dom and non-dom 9-hole tasks.

Also, msgs_dominanttrial = nih_tlbx_domsc and nih_tlbx_nondomsc = msgs_nondominanttrial because there was only one trial for each hand.  The item level scores (msgs*) and the summary scores (nih_tlbx_*sc) are therefore the same.

Hope that clarifies your questions, keep asking if other data is similarly confusing.
