As discussed in our fall notification, the town has developed the first portion of our unidirectional flushing program. Now that consistently warmer temperatures have arrived, in an effort to improve water quality and reduce water discoloration instances, the town will be conducting systematic hydrant flushing in the Hayden Rowe, Chestnut, Thayer Heights, Front Street and Springwood areas.  Flushing is anticipated to begin March 11-22, weather pending. The flushing will take place 9AM-2PM.  Please note that this flushing program requires water flow direction to be changed and could cause temporary issues in other parts of town as well.

During flushing discolored water and a decrease in water pressure may occur. Due to the amount of sediment scoured from the pipes, it could take several hours for the water to clear after daily flushing. The discoloration is caused by the mineral deposits that are naturally in the water and the water is safe to use.

Please make arrangements to minimize your water use during this time period to avoid drawing mineral deposits into your water service. Please check your water before using it and avoid doing laundry, dishes and other uses during that time. It is very important that all customers check their water before washing clothes to avoid rust discoloration.

This discoloration should only last a day or two while flushing in your immediate area. If you experience brown discolored water, the Water Department recommends you flush with cold water, preferably with an outside garden hose, until your water runs clear. Please see supplemental information on the upcoming Hydrant flushing.

We will be starting on Hayden Rowe and working our way South and then East via Chestnut starting in the Briarcliff area working toward Alprilla Farm. After that section is complete, we will send out a notice and begin to head through the Springwood development. As this is going to be a major flushing effort and we could encounter unforeseen issues, we are not sure how far we are going to make it each day. Because the daily flushing  will be all in the general vicinity, there is a chance there could be discoloration on several days and not just as we are in specific neighborhoods.  For that reason this time around it would be best to check your water on a daily basis.  We will send out notice once the project is completed and In the future we can conduct shorter, more definitive maintenance flushing that will be less disruptive and easier to predict timing.

Thank you for your cooperation and patience with this important project.
