In the coming weeks, you may receive a notice from the Hopkinton Water Department
informing you that your water service connection to the public water system is iron pipe or
unknown. This is the annual required update to the requirements that started last fall.
Following recent updates to MADEP drinking water regulations, known as the Lead
and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR), the Hopkinton Water Department has
reviewed all public service lines to identify the materials connecting homes to the
public water system.
These updates to the LCRR took effect on October 16, 2024, requiring Public Water
Systems (PWS) to create an initial Service Line Inventory (SLI) and take other
steps to protect public health.
By November 15, 2024, the PWS must complete and maintain the SLI, and notify
consumers if their service lines contain or may contain lead.
The notice you may receive will identify your water service connection as having
lead pipe (requiring replacement), galvanized pipe (requiring replacement), or an
unknown material (requiring further investigation).
If you do not receive a notice from the Hopkinton Water Department by November
30, 2025, your water service connection material has been categorized as non-
lead.
The long-term goal of the LCRR is to replace all lead and galvanized service
connections within ten years.
If you wish to self-identify your water service connection, you may follow the steps on
the Environmental Protection Agency’s website: Please follow this link to complete the
short survey or scan the QR code to complete on your phone.
