From The Director's Desk
Ah, November. It’s a time when we’ve turned back the clocks, put away our Halloween decorations, and turn our minds towards giving thanks. When I sit to reflect on the things that I am thankful for, I include things that I am thankful for professionally. I’ve been a librarian for 26 years now, serving 15 of those in the role of Library Director. Of those 15 years I’ve spent as a Director, my time in Hopkinton has been my favorite. In Hopkinton, the library is well loved by its citizens. A full 50% of all residents have a library card. Think about that for a minute, because that figure is huge. It shows that our institution is valued, but we knew that already. We have a Town Manager that takes the time to learn about the library and what our needs are. Furthermore, (as long as we’re not asking for the moon) she supports us. The Selectboard has twice now taken a pledge to support Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging. That pledge is readily described on all job openings posted by our Human Resources Department. It was one of the things that drew me to apply for this position to begin with. I thought, here’s a community that doesn’t just play lip service to these ideals, it lives them. I knew that when we conducted a diversity audit of our collection, that I had the Selectboard behind me. I knew that when I brought in training for the staff on microaggressions, I had the support of HR. Furthermore, I was delighted and astounded when the Board of Library Trustees took an oath against censorship and named the HPL a Book Sanctuary. When they became outspoken about what funding cuts to the Institute of Library and Museum Services would mean for our library and our patrons, I rejoiced. That’s a fight we haven’t yet won, but I’m grateful that it’s a fight they’re willing to stand beside me on.
I’m grateful that the HPL has such an involved and robust Friends of the Library group. We seriously could not do even a fourth of what we do without their financial support. Each year this group runs pop-up booksales, has a mini-golf fundraiser, bakes apple crisp to sell at PolyArts. They raise all of the funds that go to pay for our Museum Pass program, that go to purchase supplies as well as hiring the folks that run any programs not run by staff.
I’m grateful for the Hopkinton Public Library Foundation for not only raising a million dollars towards the new renovation and addition to the HPL, but have also for funding for special collections and programs; like our toddler Music & Movement, our coffeehouse programs, DiNovember, our Library of Things, and our newly opened CreatorSpace. A huge thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
Lastly, I’m thankful for the staff. They are well-trained professionals. I’m blessed to have MLS Librarians and non-MLS Librarians that go above and beyond their job descriptions, that truly believe in service to this community. They were willing to give this old gal a try, despite the fact that they didn’t feel they had support at the time. I hope that I have turned that around. I think that we have developed a culture of respect, grace, and change. And for that, one can be truly grateful.
So, this year, when I’m tallying up the things that I am grateful for, I will count the many staff, volunteers, and elected officials that have stood beside this library - and me. Happy Thanksgiving!
Respectfully submitted,
Nanci Hill, Library Director

Like most great things in life, Matthew hails from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Born and raised in Dracut, Matt received his Bachelors of Science in Biochemistry from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (at a date longer ago than he likes to acknowledge), and works professionally as a head of Systems and Analytics in Takeda's R&D Quality division.
Matt and his wife Emma moved to town in 2017, and expanded their family to include Oliver in 2020, and Penelope in 2024. Matt was fortunate to join the Select Board in 2025, and spends much of his spare time meeting with people and town officials about all things Hopkinton. In the brief spare moments not defined by work, town, parenting, or maintaining his marriage, Matt loves: all things Boston sports (with a special hat tip to the Celtics), video games, a good book, painting miniature figures, and doing design and development work for the board game company he co-owns with his wife and friends.

Coffee House - Cormac McCarthy with Sammie Haynes
Sunday, November 2 | 2:00 - 3:00 PM
Cormac McCarthy is a critically acclaimed singer-songwriter and musician who has been recently inducted into the Maine Music Hall of Fame. His concerts are a mix of ballads, biting humor and country blues guitar picking. He has just recorded his sixth album, “Walking with the Shadows.”
Cormac will be joined by his wife, Sammie Haynes, a Hopkinton native! She has carved out a musical career writing, performing and recording award-winning children’s music as well as fronting her Rhythm & Roots//Texas-swing band, Mainesqueeze.
More about Cormac:
“If the iconic poet Robert Frost wrote songs, they would no doubt sound like Cormac McCarthy’s. He paints vivid pictures with his words, with the stark New England setting as a backdrop. His lyrics bespeak a reflective bent that is intertwined with his Irish wit.”
–Tom Eastman, from the Conway Daily Sun
“Cormac McCarthy is the closest thing New England’s ever come to having our own Woody Guthrie.”
–M. England, Portsmouth Herald, NH
“A distinctive songwriter with a warm, powerful, inherently melodic baritone, a fine guitarist and a devastating wit … enormous writing gifts, capable of putting chills into your spine or a silly grin on your face…”
–Jeff McLaughlin, The Boston Globe

ELL Conversation Group - Conversation and Culture
Thursday, November 6, 13, and 20 | 6:00 - 7:45 PM
Conversation and Culture is a gathering of new and old friends who meet under the direction of a leader to focus on English fluency. Participants who choose this offering are fairly comfortable in everyday conversation but recognize the need to be more comfortable in the world around them.
Under the direction of the group leader, an informal survey is conducted to identify topics of interest for the group. These topics of conversation provide a focus for expanding vocabulary and understanding idioms and colloquialisms. One night the conversation might focus on great places to hike, or fascinating facts about the Boston Marathon or how and why we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Other times the focus might be more practical, such as how to navigate town government or how to become a volunteer. Often local community experts will lead the discussion. A member of town government, a local historian, or business owner may lead the group. Participants always are encouraged to share their own stories and expand the conversation.
No matter what the evenings focus might be, Conversation and Culture will help the participants to enrich their vocabulary, practice communication skills, and learn about the local community.
Registration is optional. Registering will sign you up for reminder emails and updates about meeting cancellations. Cancellations will also be posted on the library’s calendar.
Our English Language Learning groups are made possible by the Friends of the Hopkinton Public Library.
