Music, Television, and Film

Women in the entertainment industry are making waves like never before. This summer, "Barbie" became Warner Bros. highest-grossing movie at the U.S. box office, breaking previous records. In music, artists such as Beyoncé and Taylor Swift continue to push boundaries, releasing albums that not only top charts but also inspire social change.

To read iWomanTV founder Cathleen Trigg-Jones' thoughts on the "Beyoncé Effect," read her blog post here.

Changing the World: From Entertainment to Medicine

The influence of women is not limited to entertainment. In medicine, The FDA approved a drug that will treat postpartum depression (PPD), saving the lives of many mothers and their children. The drug is named Zurzuvae, and it is being produced by Biogen Inc. and Sage Therapeutics Inc. Treating PPD is important, as it can prevent new mothers from experiencing depressive thoughts, and thoughts of harming themselves or their babies. Zurzuvae’s approval is a great next step in the safety and security of mothers and their children.

In technology, female-led start-ups are thriving, with three new companies receiving substantial funding this week alone. Motivo Health received $14 million in series A funding and connects mental health therapists to clinical supervisors so they can help them gain a wider understanding of life, and help them complete their therapy licenses. Timeless, which received over $300,000 in funding through winning the Women’s Startup Challenge, is an app that empowers those suffering from Alzheimer’s to stay connected and engage with family members. The Flex company, which received  $7.7 million in funding, creates tampon alternatives that are safe and sustainable.

The influence of women is being felt across industries, from Beyoncé in music to "Barbie" in film, and even to groundbreaking achievements in medicine and tech. Women are not just participating; they're leading, innovating, and breaking barriers. They are earning their way to the top of every industry, using their voices and talents to effect global change.

This Week's Highlights:

Music: Beyoncé pays the D.C. Metro $100,000 to stay open after severe weather delays her concert.

Television: "American Horror Story" Season 12 will be released in September with Halley Feiffer directing and has stars such as Kim Kardashian, Cara Delevingne, and Emma Roberts

Film: Greta Gerwig’s Barbie grosses $1 billion dollars at the box office, making it the highest grossing film directed by a woman.

Medicine: Abortion rights are getting fought state by state, most recently in Ohio where Issue 1, legislation that would make it harder to amend the state's constitution, was voted against. If it had passed, women's rights would be even harder to protect.
