The rhetoric of sustainability and sustainable development has been used in various ways by different actors. I would like to investigate how this rhetoric has been employed by residential development projects to circumvent the food security and sustainability issues involved in developing agricultural lands. I hope that this literature will lend itself to an understanding of how Native Hawaiian concepts and imagery, in particular, have been exploited to the benefit of corporate development. Perhaps this will better equip policymakers and the public to critically interpret marketing schemes and land use issues.
