Aloha everyone,
Happy New Year of 2021! And welcome to the Spring 2021 Semester.
I am writing to share with you that with the approval from President Lassner on Dec. 18th, 2020, our school name has officially changed into
Thompson School of Social Work & Public Health.
Since 2016, Public Health has been a part of Myron B. Thompson School of Social Work ohana. The renaming reflects the major units within the school and highlights the interdisciplinary strength as one school. With the school renaming, we are excited about the continued and strengthened synergy across units in interprofessional education, training and practice, research collaborations, workforce, and career developments.
This is a wonderful step forward for the Thompson School. The new name reflects the critical importance of public health and of an interdisciplinary approach to solving complex problems around social injustice and health inequity. In addition, the shortened version of the School’s name will no longer be the “School of Social Work” but the “Thompson School.” This will keep at the forefront of our recognition of the achievements and dedication to Hawai‘i’s people of Myron B. Thompson.
The School is named to honor Myron “Pinky” Thompson. Thompson earned his MSW from the University of Hawaiʻi in 1953. He was a social worker and a leader in the struggle for the preservation of the Hawaiian culture. He was a pioneer to use the Native Hawaiian wisdom and knowledge to provide services and healings, and to help ensure the future of Native Hawaiians and all people of Hawaiʻi. The legacy of Myron B. Thompson and his amazing contributions to the communities will continue to inspire us to work for social justice and health equity for people in Hawai‘i and beyond.
