Hello to all

I just download the 12-stable version. I have a problem with the installer... initially everything works ok until the network setting up stage is reached. In the DHCP stage everything hangs. Note that I have tried both ethernet and WiFi connections.

Thank you

Can you give us more information? What does dmesg show? What happens
when you run dhclient manually? What happens when you give your
manually-run dhclient SIGINFO? What's the output of ktrace and truss?

Thanks,

Hello again

please excuse me, I am a newbie in this OS. Well I run the installer and when I reach the DHCP step then the installer tries to make the assignment and this takes forever.

How could I extract the information you are asking me? Should I open a terminal (as root) and then what?

Again, please excuse my ignorance.

Thank you.

No worries. We're all newbs in some ways. ;)

What I would suggest is two things:

1. Take some time to read the FreeBSD Handbook (link below)
2. Take some time to read the HardenedBSD wiki (link below)

Doing those two steps will help you learn HardenedBSD. The FreeBSD
Handbook is useful since HardenedBSD is a derivative of FreeBSD.

I experienced something similar, trying to install under VirtualBox.

I get the following message:

Dec 28 21:17:33 dhclient[72182]: send_packet: No buffer space available

Using any kind of network on VBox (NAT, bridge, etc) and WiFi under the Win10 laptop that runs VBox.

Don't know if has something to do with this issue or is different.

Thanks!

I experienced the same on virtualbox 6.0 under Mac.
I just installed using static IP and changed rc.conf after installation.

I'll take a deeper look soon on this issue. FreeBSD's networking stack
made some HUGE changes in 12.0 (primarily switching more drivers to
iflib). Additionally, HardenedBSD debuted non-Cross-DSO CFI in 12.
It's possible that something in dhclient is violating CFI. It's also
possible that the network stack changes could be the issue. More
research needed. :)

I've reproduced this on vanilla FreeBSD. I'll file a bug report
upstream. So, it's not an issue that's HardenedBSD-specific. Thanks
for reporting! I'll keep everyone updated.

I installed virtualbox 5.2.22 and extension pack 5.2.22r126460 into a new 64 bit Dell laptop, running Windows10 about 5 weeks ago.  I copied the iso images for both HardenedBSD 11.2  and more recently the HardenedBSD 12.0 (what's new here?).  Both installed and are working fine using the Network device "NAT".  I just performed a hbsd-update on both "machines" and restarted them.  Both are ok.

I have also used the network "Bridged Adapter" configured to use the Intel PRO/1000MT Desktop (the default in Bridge mode), on both "machines".  In all cases, dhclient correctly acquired an address.

Virtual machine configurations
The HBSD 11.2 (20-Dec) machine is configured to use  2 processors, 4GB.  (it is building needed ports), also running ipfw.ko, otherwise a default install.
The HBSD 12.0 (1200058) machine uses 1 processor and 2G. (Everything as default, MBR install)
Aside they're both configured with fixed size vdi disks.

I've deliberately left everything in as near default mode as possible, until I understand any quirks of these 64bit things. The physical network interface is a "Realtek USB GbE" controller, and is correctly picking up IPv6 addresses (which aren't used by HBSD by default).

Unfortunately Shawn is probably going to need more information from those experiencing a problem, otherwise I doubt that he'll be able to replicate?

Kind regards, Dewayne.

I've replicated with both FreeBSD and HardenedBSD on VirtualBox 6.0 on
a Macbook Pro. I plan to file a bug report today with FreeBSD, given
that the issue stems from them.

Is this specific to VirtualBox or to its virtualized ethernet device?

I tested multiple virtualized NICs: 1) emulated Intel (em) NIC; 2)
virtio-net NIC

Both NICs caused the same issue in bsdinstall to be exhibited.

Going from TrueOS to HardenedBSD is an unsupported operation. ;P

I've filed the bug report:

I'll now go "bug" some FreeBSD peeps about reproducing and fixing the
issue. ;)

FreeBSD hasn't fixed the issue, yet. I guess we could revert the
offending commit until a fix comes in.

So, in connexion to my previous message, is there any way to install hardenedBSD ?

Thank you.

Just skip setting up networking in the installer. Set it up post-installation.
