How would people feel about the flickr extension for Media Wiki? If
people are interested in this extension, I'll create a HacDC Flickr
account and request the needed API key

www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Flickr

I also eliminated the need for index.php to be in every link (So now
you can just do links as wiki.hacdc.org/Byzantium (although since I
only added an htaccess file and didn't change the wiki config to
reflect that, the wiki will still add the index.php as you surf
around-I can change this if people like it).

We should each probably review
www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Category:Stable_extensions for extensions that
we might think will be helpful.

Like I found www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:NewUsersList (Allows you
to bring up a list of new users which might help us completely
eliminate our small spam problem).

Speaking of spam, I did confirm that people have to confirm their
email addresses before editing, creating, or moving pages. Although
when I was looking at the database, I noticed that some of the spam is
coming from accounts w/ verified email addresses. They seem to create
an account, verify their email address, create a page for their spam.

HacDC already has a Flickr group:

http://www.flickr.com/groups/hacdc/

Not sure who has the credentials for it.

That's a group, not an account. The API has to be requested by an account.

What would we use it for?  Offloading image storage and bandwidth, or are there more features?  I don't think our Dreamhost account has limits on either in theory.

Almost all web hosts that advertise unlimited space/bandwidth do have abuse clauses.

Now I will admit I think Flickr does have an abuse clause, but I have not heard of anyone being kicked off Flickr for taking up too much space or bandwidth.

Also I would imagine Flickr is either served by multiple data centers or a cdn (not to mention that is what their system is designed for) and therefore should make for a faster serving location for photos/videos

And even if HacDC doesn't post photos to Flickr as on organization, I think a good chunk of HacDC posts on Flickr as individuals.
