Hey Everyone,

I bought a Technics SL-D1 turntable about a year ago from a record shop in Baltimore (El Supremo - one of my favorite spots for record shopping).

It has worked great through some pretty heavy use, but is now having speed regulation issues.  Basically, sometimes the record slows down to a comically slow speed... not always, but now it is most of the time.

I have done a bit of research into the issue, and it seems that cleaning the contacts and maybe a couple of drops of oil in the main bearing will fix this.

Does this sound right?

If so...

I am an electronics beginner, so I would like to come by the space to get some eyes and advice on popping it open and cleaning the components. Is there contact cleaner and appropriate oil at the space that I can use (and drop some $ in the can for :)?

Any advice or insights are appreciated... I already miss my tunes.

Thanks,
Steve

If it is direct drive like the photo, then yes probably cleaning and lubricating will fix it.
If it has a belt between the motor and the platter then that can wear out and slip.
Bring it by Monday night after 7:30 or so and we can apply chemistry.  There is some on hand.

Thanks Dan,

It is direct drive.  From my research, I have gathered that the "D" in SL-D1 means direct drive. Technics turntables with a "B" there have belts.

Yeah Chemistry!!

Ah...

Hey, in a similar spirit, does anyone know where an SL-D2 manual can be gotten?
Mine seems to have a motor controller problem (though the problem described here below might be present) ...
_and_ a bad preamp. Preamp can be replaced with something else. Motor controller? Not so much ... not by me anyway ...

You can find manuals here

you have to register to download them.  I already did that and downloaded it (they did not have the SL-D1 but did have the SL-D2)

It is attached to this email.

Oops! I meant to say I needed a service manual ...

However, thanks! I appreciate the thought.

I may be scrounging for a motor board or something, somewhere ...
