Anyone interested  in environmental & sustainability issues? I suspect we're a few decades away from serious ecological disruptions that collapse the global economy and destroy civilization, & I'd like to do something about it. The good news is that, contrary to popular belief, doing something is both easy and often pays for itself.

I'm interested and would love to hear your ideas.  ...though I should probably confess that my views on the subject are somewhere between grim and bitter.

One of the best things to do is just inform people about how easy and
cheap it is to help. For example, RMI put out a report (free download
at www.rmi.org/Knowledge-Center/Library/C02-12_CoolCitizensHouseholdSolutions)
that shows how a typical household can reduce greenhouse gas emissions
by well over half and it basically pays for itself in lower energy
costs.
Another major problem is that there are too many things people can do
- there's no way they can do them all. Obviously they should do what's
most effective - having the greatest benefit for the least effort -
but what is that? This is an extremely difficult question since it is
almost impossible to evaluate the relative effectiveness of, say,
recycling plastic bottles vs. removing invasive plants, but these are
the decisions people have to make and they need the best information
possible. Is anybody working on this thorny problem?

I do my part, by scrapping down any gear i receive, re-using and repurposing what i can, and putting the remainder through the maryland university recycling program. I wish the space had a policy of this, but there appear to not be enough interested hands to even sort the incoming stuff we do have, or maintain order among the belongings in the building.

I always found it surprising that there weren't any permaculture
afficionados hanging out at HacDC.

Staying informed on legislative issues and submitting comments is another
way to be environmentally friendly. The State of Maryland is now
considering of removing the fee associated with the Polluted Runoff Law;
the revised Chesapeake Bay restoration agreement doesn't seem too popular
anymore; the Poultry Fair Share Act in the Maryland Delegation is about
chicken poop in the Bay; Fracking Ban & Fracking Wastewater Ban will be a
hot topic in the Maryland Governor's race this November; and Maryland even
has legislation on Native Species on the ballot this session. And if you
love animals, you may want to learn about the Maryland Animal Welfare Act.
It covers laboratory animals used for testing, factory farms, and roadside
zoos.

If you love recycling, Pepco offers $50 to recycle your old, working
refrigerator and/or freezer. The other utilities may offer similar
recycling incentives.

There was a visitor (an AU student, I think) who was experimenting with
growing fungi, on trash, for construction materials. I forget who he
worked with but he was learning about Arduino to drive the environmental
controls.

I am interested in this subject, currently my main areas of activity are:
- Computer recycling
- Native plant gardening
- Composting

I would love to collaborate with anyone to advance these subjects at the space. Any related concepts would be great to learn about too.

Dear Members of HacDC!

Please let me briefly introduce myself. My name is Josef Hoermandinger, I work at Salzburg State Parliament, Austria, and as a part of my job I am responsible to contribute to Open Government Data and eDem projects and to come up with Democracy reform concepts. Privately I am involved with ChaosTreff Salzburg, a local Hacker and Maker group, and I am a regular guest at the c3 in Hamburg.
Starting from Yochai Benkler's essay "Sharing Nicely", I try to find out right now, how self-organized and self sustainable groups form an altenative to market driven consumer processes in society. Knowing that the idea of Hacker Spaces was and still is one oft he driving forces behind this development, I am earger to learn, what a real Hacker Space in the US looks like, how it works and how people cocreate new knowledge, make technology feasible for non-industrial, peer production application. My hypothesis is, that this form of organisation has become as prevalent as it is still underestimated in most oft he world's societies.
At this point I have a request to you: I will be in DC between March 30 and April 08 attending a course at Georgetown University and it would be a crucial contribution to my research if I could speak to one or some of your members responsible for or involved in the development of HacDC or of recent projects there (eg. Byzantium looks amazing).
My questions would be about the development of HacDC in the past five years, the significance of peer based production and peer learning environments in today's US society (or certain parts of it) and of course the changes the internet brought about and how this development is going to be in the near future. I do not look for nor expect an academic or scientific expertise (the internet and the University libraries are full of those already anyhow), I am looking for a real-life-tested opinion from somebody who does not merely describe but is part of the development. I would use my findings (I will NOT make a verbatim interview or record statements that could be tracked back to anybody personally) for a five pages report about self-governance in complex networks presented in the abovementioned course at Georgetown University.

Best wishes to you all and hope to hear from you soon.

Josef Hoermandinger

This is the wrong place for your post since this is supposed to be
specifically about environmental issues. Go to www.hacdc.org for more
information. (There should be a general meeting April 8 that would be
worth attending.)

gardening, passive solar, and home grown electricity and that's my list

i have 4ft tall mint in my front yard and we replaced the grass with
veggies and herbs all the way out to the curb. the tomatoes grow like
weeds by the curb even without much water.

I've been gradually removing grass from the yard for years. I now use
an ancient manual mower on the little that's left. Anyone want a power
mower (there's a leak in a fuel hose & it hasn't been used in well
over a year)? I've also started boring holes in the ground and filling
them with wood chips so water sinks in rather than running off.
